ASTM Standard for SBS Products
We keep getting calls from Architects with some confusion about the ASTM standards that are available for SBS cap sheets. As an Architect, in my past when I was practicing architecture I know for a fact that it was confusing, and still is confusing. I've attached a document to this blog that does a great job of explaining the difference between ASTM D 6162, ASTM D 6163 and ASTM D 6164. Even ASTM has noticed that there is some confusion and added a note to the last revision of ASTM D 6164 stating:
“Many modified bituminous sheets are currently marketed with polyester mat reinforced
with glass yarns to improve processing in the manufacture of the finished modified
bitumen product and to reduce distortions that may be introduced during production.
These glass yarns are typically a small percentage of the reinforcement and do not
contribute to the physical properties of the finished product so much as to make these
products be classified by D6162.”
Please contact me if you would like to discuss this issue in detail.
